This poster is a great visual representation of metaphorical associations and color characteristics. The main aspect of the poster that draws one to it is of course the clolor blue. The color blue is a bit awkward for this poster if one has not seen the film. Blue is supposed to be portrayed as a calm and distant color, but in this poster it is used negatively as cold, dark, and morose. In the movie I believe there is a scene where the joker(above) is giving batman a difficult time. The joker has batman pinned down in a difficult place and says "Why so blue?". From this point on the color blue has become a negative and obscure characteristic. The poster has a large luminosity behind the joker as to show him glowing and out of this world. It also could be an explosion in the backgroud because of the sparks flying around and the crumbling buildings. An interesting thing is that there is the same luminosity behind batman as to show he is an equal maybe? This could be the poster saying both the characters are fictional? This poster has so many semiotics and visual elements it's hard to describe them all.
I agree with everything Jordan said. Normally the color blue does represent calm and zen like characteristics. However in this movie blue is a sort of morbid and scary color. It almost represents the absense of good influences and corruption. This movie was hyped up so much and got so much publicity that i'm sure everyone sort of has an idea of what it is about. But i never really noticed that the joker has a ring of light around him and the batman symbol does as well. This in my opinion is really symbolic of the fact that in many ways batman and the joker on the same level. The movie deals with a battle between good and evil and actually defining what good is and what a hero is versus what a villain is. So i find it very ironic that there is not some difference in how batman and the joker are portrayed on the poster. on the other hand, this could be just a method to draw the audience's eye to both images at the same time. either way, this is a very interesting strategy.
Good job on the title for the poster and in discussing the effect of the color blue as having the opposite effect of the associations we might normally make. Blue is calm and serene but it can also be icy and dark as you all note.
Interesting that the creators of the poster would highlight the villian (over the hero)--or as Erin notes, not that much difference in how the two are portrayed, which draws attention to the similarities between the two rather than differences. In other words, rather than being asked to identify with the hero, it seems like we're really being asked to identify with the villian.
