I never saw this movie, but i really wanted to. This movie poster says a lot. The fact that it is almost all in black and white sort of suggests to me that it is a serious movie. The fact that Clint Eastwood has a white light sort of shining on him makes me think he is the main character in this movie, along with the fact that he is the only one on the poster. His gaze suggests that he is out to get you. His look is almost scary. The gun in his hand adds to the element of seriousness and severity. It kind of seems like someone has wronged him, and he wants to set it right. Right off the bat one can tell that this movie is not a chick flick, but rather a dramatic action movie. The colors and font are what make people think this. If Gran Torino was written in pink letters, everyone would take it a lot less seriously. The fact that Clint Eastwoods name is alone and in white really draws your attention to it. This movie poster is incredibly intense.
Really good points about the 'spotlight' effect on Eastwood, and his direct and confrontational gaze toward the viewer. The black and white seems overly harsh--very, very serious.
